Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: The property was neat and clean, and was separate to the hosts' house (i.e. private). Effective A/C in bedroom if needed. Netflix TV. The hosts served a delicious and very filling breakfast at whatever time we requested. They were friendly and keen to please, e.g. providing extra kitchen equipment we asked for and answering any questions about how to travel from Aluva railway station or Kochi airport to their place by bus rather than needing to get an Uber. The small kitchen was adequate for preparing ourselves an evening meal and the small shop next door to the homestay has a good fridge for fresh milk and other basic supplies such as a few veg, lentils, rice, bread etc. Other small shops with a bit more fruit and veg are a 5-10 minute walk away. We discovered that the beach closest to the homestay (Munambam - about a 10 minute gentle walk along the coast) was for us by far the nicest - on sunny days the sea became incredibly calm and we could do normal relaxing sea swimming there rather than the constant diving under big waves which we are used to in most southern Kerala beaches, and very few other people used it other than the fishermen in the early morning. The big Chinese fishing nets are also next to that which are fun to watch. Cherai beach was about a 30 minute walk - popular with Indian tourists wanting to take selfies and go to restaurants, but there is very little beach to speak of and swimming there is not as easy (the role of Indian lifeguards is more to stop people going in the water than to rescue those in trouble and, given the high number of non-swimmers in the population, they understandably tend to stop anyone going in at all if the sea is even slightly rough, without finding out how strong a swimmer one is). Kuzhupilly beach was about 2.5 miles beyond Cherai beach - really nice for a day on the beach in that there are lots of pine trees to give shade through the day and, in late October, there was pretty much no one there other than us.

Negative: We were mostly happy cooking for ourselves in the evening but be aware the nearest restaurants we found were about a 20-minute walk away - although we didn't ask much to find out about nearer ones. It is possible that in high season more eateries open up close by - we were there late October. There also seemed to be only very limited snack and food options near Kuzhupilly and Munambam beaches, just FYI. But that was why the amazing breakfast at the homestay and the ability to cook for ourselves was so helpful. All 3 beaches we went to (Munambam, Cherai, Kuzhupilly) are fairly typical of southern Kerala in that there is some rubbish (bottles, plastic bags, flipflops etc) that gets washed up and then not cleared up, but we still really enjoyed our time at the beach and found it peaceful and relaxing other than that. No complaints about the homestay itself - we were very happy and, although the fan in the outdoor seating area was temporarily not working, it should be fixed by the time others stay there.

Summary: Delightful hosts, delicious breakfasts, clean apartment, close to Munambam beach - we really relaxed
